Another week brings with it the latest developments in the world of online poker.
The road to regulation: Delaware newest state to become online poker-friendly
Delaware now has a new law that authorizes three racetrack casinos and a state lottery to offer different forms of internet gambling, which includes poker. The bill won approval by the Senate with a 14-6 vote. The governor’s chief legal counsel Mike Barlow said that the bill was a way of ensuring that Delaware continues to enjoy a thriving gaming industry, and keeps jobs safe while also attracting more investment, creating new employment opportunities and ensuring that the industry contributes to the economy.
The new law makes Delaware third behind the Virgin Islands and Nevada to legalize online poker and casino gaming. It is also the first state to enact a legislation legalizing internet gambling in the first session of the legislation’s debut.
What does the law provide for? Under the Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012, online gambling will be conducted only intra-state in the beginning. Inter-state gambling over the internet will be allowed by the law only if it is determined that gambling of such a nature is in compliance with federal law and those in jurisdictions where players are based. Casino and poker games will be offered on sites branded after the casinos in the state. However, it is still unclear whether Delaware will pip Nevada as the first state in the history of the United States to rake a legal hand of the much-loved game that is poker.
